Ugo Schiavi - The Minuit Zone

Within the framework of the Biennale des Arts de la Ville de Nice dedicated to the Oceans “The Sea Around Us” and to the holding in Nice of UNOC 2025, the United Nations Conference on the Ocean, artist Ugo Schiavi invested the great hall of the former slaughterhouses of Nice with a tentacular installation on the world of abysses.

This retrofuturist universe consists of video, sounds and sculptures created from recycled, natural or industrial elements. In resonance with today’s ecological and technological issues, this hybrid environment convolves on ancestral mythologies or contemporary imaginaries of the great backgrounds, underwater archaeology or fiction, bioluminescence and bioacoustics.

The worrying and fascinating atmosphere created evokes the destruction, by climate change and marine pollution, of a world that is still so unexplored and fantasized.

The title “The Minuit Zone” refers to the bathypelagic zone, the layer of the water column located between 1,000 and 4,000 meters where sunlight no longer penetrates.

This sensitive and striking artistic proposition is an extraordinary opportunity to address major and unknown issues of the oceans.
