Hospital knights of Jerusalem, Rhodes and Malta, spearheads of the Latin Mediterranean (1046-1798)

Lecture by Alain Blondy, Professor Emeritus at the Sorbonne

Cross-proposal of the CUM and Lascaris Palace.

The pious foundation of Amalfi, the hospital knights of Jerusalem, Rhodes and Malta became a religious and military order in the 13th century. Actor of the heurs and misfortunes of the Latin kingdoms of Palestine, they set up a time in Cyprus and conquered Rhodes in the 14th century, becoming as many sailors as knights. Hunted from their island by Saladin, Charles Quint welcomed them in 1530 in Malta where they were the first line of defense first against the Ottoman invasions, then against the corsary incursions of the Barbaresques. In 1798, they were driven out of Malta, which became thanks to them the foreport of Marseilles, when the Management Board confided the capture of the island in Bonaparte, on their way to Egypt.
