The Ocean, CO2 pump
Meetingwith Elsa Simon,PhD student at the IMEV (Institut de la Mer de Villefranche), Solène Motreuil and Louis Caray, both engineer assistants at IMEV
In the illuminated layer of the world ocean, phytoplankton absorbs CO2 by making photosynthesis, then this carbon is transferred to the depths as organic matter. This mechanism, called “carbon organic pump”, is crucial for the absorption of CO2 by the ocean.
