#1 - La Promenade des Anglais

Remarkably, the birth of the Promenade des Anglais, built on the seaside, is the product of a private initiative, that of two British, Reverend Lewis Way (1772–40) appointed pastor of the Anglican church of Nice in 1822, and the rich widow Lady Olivia Barnard Sparrow (1778–63), accustomed to the British seaside promenades. History has retained the philanthropic character of the operation, in order to give work to a local population impoverished by poor crops. In 1824, at its opening, it was a two-metre wide road, from the mouth of the Paillon to the present Meyerbeer street. In 1903, the « camin dei Inglesi », which became the Promenade des Anglais, reached the racecourse near the Var.

The seafront symbolizes the urban and architectural flank of the promenade. If the first half in the east (from the Albert 1st garden) aligns more or less rigorously with buildings, iconic hotels, sometimes villas with garden or palaces with various styles, the dominant one is eclectic, art deco and functionalist. The second half, beyond the Palace of Agriculture (the mouth of the Magnan River), has a more heteroclite character. In any case, the elevations remain on a rather high velum with façades of aperture or ostentatories symbolizing a certain architectural image of the city.
