#16 - Tombes célèbres : Le cimetière du château
The Castle Cemetery was created in 1783 on an edition of the King of Sardinia Victor Amédée III.
It was inaugurated on July 10, 1782 at the place where the ancient citadel of the city rose, next to the castle keeping some vestiges of the most modern walls of it, erected in the sixteenth century.
This cemetery is the most spectacular in Nice both by its location and by the number of quality funeral monuments there. With a surface of 19,000 square meters, it offers a panorama of the city.
It also presents the peculiarity of joining in its enclosure, moresieurs groups nationnal, religious and social. It is both the cemetery of the small people of Old Nice, that of the political and social notables of the late nineteenth century and that of the foreign communities formed by tourism. Thus, there are Catholic tombs, but also Protestant and Orthodox.
The style of the tombs is quite varied. the oldest, those of the early nineteenth century, are neoclassical and imitate Roman sarcophagi. chapels are most often of a ligure style and, to a lesser extent neo-Gothic and neo-classical scent.
Next to the entrance of the cemetery is the chapel of the Sainte-Trinité, built in 1935, on the plan of the architect François Aragon.
After the fire of the Nice Opera in 1881, which made 200 victims, a pyramid-shaped monument, paying tribute to the latter, was erected at the entrance to the cemetery.
Good visit!
