The Archaeological Crypt

Heritage

Discovered on the occasion of archaeological excavations as part of the development of line 1 of the tram, the crypt allows to understand the history of the city and its fortifications.
With its 2,000 m2, it is the second in France after the Louvre. The archaeologists have updated the defensive system related to the northern gate of the city. Several states follow each other (between the 13th and 17th centuries), testifying to the importance of the Nicaraguan fortifications destroyed in 1706 on the order of Louis XIV and the evolution of military architecture. This large-scale excavation, carried out under difficult and rare conditions, has restored another facet of the history of Nice.
