The quadrature of the circle, exhibition of Anne-Laure Wuillai
Explore our relationship with the sea
An artist who graduated from the Beaux-Arts in Paris, Anne-Laure Wuillai chose the Côte d’Azur, for its proximity to the sea. In her laboratory-style workshop, hosted at the Station in Nice, she kept fragments of the Mediterranean from a performative, dreamy and wild gesture.
“I like to question our ways of living the world, the standards we produce to put everything on our scale.”
Anne-Laure Wuillai forces the line of classification to the absurd, to better question our ways of apprehending, categorizing and consuming our environment. Sometimes in her series of “Hyper-conditionings”, she fills a caddy of pockets of sea water on the edge, sometimes in her series “Artificials”, she creates furniture moving the flashy blue waves, referring to the cliché images that are made of the color of water. She imagines snowballs where plastic wastes are found on the coast, or postcards filled with water, like memories taken away ... but for how long? By the grotesque, she thus comes out of the militant gesture to produce a work, which laughs with awe of the cells of the mind and invites to dream again our relationship to water, in heaven, to the earth, this living body.

“I like to think, with a bit of black humour, that one day there would be so many packagings in our oceans, that these would eventually pack the whole sea”
